Torn Fox is a new Mage series about young magicians who find mystery and adventure in their everyday world. In a post-apocalyptic world where magic works instead of electricity, teenage twins Craven and Tom try to master new Mage skills even as they struggle to pass school tests, survive werewolf attacks, Esprits, a mysterious new sister, an interfering specter and a missing older brother! It’s is exciting and funny with a touch of the macabre.

Torn Fox is geared toward pre-teen and young teens and is told from the point of view of an overly serious thirteen-year-old boy named Creaven. The Dragon Wars, which 50 years ago disrupted human civilization left his world a mess, but humans have begun to rebuild their society with the very energy source that helped them survive the war-- Magic…In the war, Modern Technology was shattered, paranormal creatures came out of hiding, and the polar icecaps melted in the fight for survival. This is an alternate world where magic works instead of electricity. This is the story of how teenage twins Craven and Tom try to master new Mage skills while still trying to pass school tests, survive werewolf attacks, Esprits, a mysterious new sister, a meddlesome specter and a missing older brother!  Creaven’s greatest dream is to be a hero like those from the Dragon War. To that end, he does his best to get the best grades despite the disruptive efforts of his reckless, troublemaking twin brother Tom, the school bully, and a teacher who despises Creaven’s entire family. However, the biggest obstacle for his goal is that he can’t learn magic until he undergoes a trial and enters eighth grade. Both of which are denied him until he turns fourteen. However, when Tom finds a way for them to go through the Mage Ritual early, it causes no end of troubles with the Mage Town Council and school, not to mention their family.

Creaven’s school quandaries are only half of what’s troubling his mind. He also has to deal with a mysterious adoptive sister with trust issues. Tom’s resentful attitude towards her doesn’t help matters. Although Creaven does understand his brother’s attitude, having lost their older brother only a few years earlier and their parents seeming lack of concern, will this cause a rift between the brothers? Creaven is also dealing with uneasy feelings of moving into their new house and rumors of werewolves wandering the town. Creaven’s plate might just be overloaded. However, with his friends and grandparents looking out for him he just might make it through the year. The story deals with the situations using humor manages to show the strength of Creaven’s family and friendship bonds.

Dear Andrew,

You have a wonderful narrative voice that is powerful yet gentle, and I enjoyed your writing style.  It is always easy to tell when an author spends time with their writing.  It is obvious that you have done a significant amount of planning and preparation in crafting your work.  Throughout your story, you do a nice job of keeping the reader engaged, in conjunction with Sci-Fi and fantasy, which is very important when attempting to capture the attention your younger readers.  You do a nice job of quickly making your way through your story with details and a certain voice that allows your reader to really interact with the characters (who are nicely developed and easy to identify with). So many writers for juveniles rush through their stories without really developing them.  To me, characterization is one of the most important elements of a children’s story.  Without good characterization, the kids won’t be able to connect; if the story is strong but the characters are weak, it simply will not work, it will go splat and drip, like when a baby throws butter against the wall. This is not the case with your work;  Mickey, Andrew, Mrs. Layton, the rest, and of course Tom and Craven are all realistic and lifelike entities – you have come forth with an excellent piece of writing for the juvenile market.

There is a lot that goes into writing a book to make it real. Below are some initial sketches the Dales new house, and some artist workups for the cover of the book.. The cover art is finally done.
